I have more than three decades of experience in Microbiology, with a background in pathology, virology, and infectious diseases. I also have active research in the evaluation and development of diagnostic products for clinical microbiology and have completed approximately 100 FDA in vitro diagnostic device trials or market evaluations of diagnostic tests. I’ve been a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology for last 21 years.

Prior to my affiliation with Popper and Company, I was a Professor at UNM, with my primary responsibility as the Director of Clinical Virology and helping with the formation of TriCore Reference Laboratories. In 1998, I assumed the responsibilities for both Microbiology and Virology. I retired from the University of New Mexico, but remain as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathology to continue a research contract. I am now in a new role as Director of Research and Clinical Trials at TriCore Reference Laboratories.

Prior to UNM, I served as the Director of the Infectious Disease Section for 17 years. I was funded for ten years by Sandia National Laboratories working on the development of long-range sensors for biodefense. I have also been a collaborator for 25 years in the Multi-Center AIDS Cohort Study and am still active on several NIH grants affiliated with this cohort.

I received my B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biological Sciences from Wright State University and my Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. I then completed an American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) post-doctoral fellowship program at the University of Washington.

When not immersed in microbiology, I am helping my wife re-establish her career in fiber arts, and recently constructed a loom for her. I also enjoy country & western dancing.
